Commercial and public buildings must support their users, operations, services, access and long-term maintenance. Structural decisions need to coordinate with architecture, building services, foundations, site infrastructure, construction sequence and the building’s intended use.
WHG’s public service information references shopping centres, hotels, public buildings, hospitals, museums, sports complexes, fire-station headquarters and other commercial or public structures.
Structural engineering considerations
– Building use and loading
– Structural grid and planning flexibility
– Foundations and ground conditions
– Long spans, atria or large public spaces
– Construction sequence
– Service penetrations and coordination
– Durability and maintenance
– Site access and temporary works
Integrated civil and structural support
Commercial and public projects also require roads, drainage, water, sewerage, earthworks and access. Coordinating these systems early reduces conflicts between the building and the wider site.
